APPROPRIATE DRESS POLICY

Nackawic High is an educational institution and, as such, it is the workplace for all of us. Knowledge regarding dress that is appropriate in business and social situations is important to ensure success both in school and after graduation. All members of our educational community are to dress appropriately, in a neat, clean, safe and sensible manner, when in school, attending a school function or when representing the school.

Basic Principle: Clothes must be worn in a way such that genitals, buttocks, nipples, and breasts are fully covered with opaque fabric. All items listed in the “must wear” and “may wear” categories below must meet this basic principle.

Students must wear, while following the basic principle above:

  1. shirt (with fabric in the front, back, and on the sides under the arms), AND
  2. pants, shorts, skirt, or dress, AND
  3. shoes

Students may wear, if it does not violate the basic principle above:            

  • Hats (must allow the face to be visible to staff, and not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff).
  • Religious headwear
  • Hoodie sweatshirts (wearing the hood overhead is allowed, but the face must be visible to school staff).
  • Fitted pants, including opaque leggings, yoga pants and “skinny jeans”.
  • Pajamas.
  • Ripped jeans, if underwear and buttocks are not exposed.
  • Tank tops, including spaghetti straps; halter tops.
  • Athletic attire.             

Students may not wear any of the following:

  • Violent language or images.
  • Images or language depicting/suggesting drugs, alcohol, vaping, or paraphernalia (or any illegal item or activity).
  • Bullet proof vest, body armor, or tactical gear.
  • Hate speech, profanity, pornography.
  • Images or language that creates a hostile or intimidating environment based on any protected class or consistently marginalized groups.
  • Any clothing that reveals visible undergarments (visible waistbands and visible straps are allowed).
  • Swimsuits (except as required in class or athletic practice).
  • Accessories that could be considered dangerous or could be used as a weapon.
  • Any item that obscures the face (except as a religious observance or as personal protective equipment (PPE).

Parents share the responsibility of seeing that students are dressed properly for school. School personnel have the responsibility of maintaining and enforcing an appropriate dress code that is conducive to learning.

Staff are expected to address any student they feel is in violation of this policy and record the infraction and the results of the conversation on a Behavior Tracking form and submit it to the office.

**Students who do not abide by our policy may be sent home.
